In December I had the opportunity to photograph jazz legend Mynton Marsalis for the The Eastman School of Music as part of their 'Eastman Presents' concert series.
I was very excited when they asked me back to photograph the incredible 16 time Grammy winner Bela Fleck. My friend Steve Greene, a Rochester Jazz legend, graciously loaned me his signed copy of images created by Louis Ouzer; 'Contemporary Musicians in Photographs'. Looking through that book made me fully realize what an honor it is to be a part of history in the making. I can only hope to create images as moving as Louis Ouzer's.
The performance was stunningly out of the ordinary as Bela played with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Mark Davis Scatterday, conductor. The performance was one to remember as the amazing sounds of Bela's banjo filled the sold out Kodak Hall at Eastman Theater.
Following the performance Bela took the time to meet with his fans, talk to them about his music, take photos and sign CD's. I'm very thankful for the opportunity to have photographed this special performance in music history.
